چکیده
Over the past months, as this special issue took shape, the Editors of Science have monitored an exchange of seven letters initiated by three queries from M. Bacon. These queries concern the popular definitions of "genes," "genetics," and "epigenetics." Below, we reprint excerpts from these letters, referring interested readers to www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/293/5532/1103/DC1 for the complete text and additional references.

Direct Bisulfite Sequencing and Methylation Specific PCR to Detect Methylation of p15INK4b and F7 genes in Coronary Artery Disease Patients
Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have identified genetic variants contributing to the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) at the chromosome 9p21 locus. The chromosome 9p21 is an important susceptibility locus for several multifactorial diseases like ischemic stroke, aortic aneurysm, type 2 diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease (CAD). F7 gene because of its role in activating the ...
متن کاملHealthy Generation Components on Acquisition, Application, and Transferring Values to Next Generations According to Islamic Views and Genetics
Background and purpose: Generational health analysis on the acquisition, application, and transfer of intergenerational values is an important issue from the perspective of religion and genetics. Healthy generation means generational solidarity and lack of disruption or crisis in generations despite generational differences. The purpose of this study was to identify the common points and soluti...
متن کاملThe Role of Epigenetics in Cancer Drug Resistance
Cancer is caused by aberrant genetic and epigenetic changes in genes expression. DNA methylation, histone modification, and microRNAs gene deregulation are the most known epigenetic changes in different stages of cancer. Since every tumor has its own specific epigenome, any abnormal pattern is a potential biomarker for classification of different types of tumors. Despite, tumorigenesis, abnorma...
متن کاملEpigenetics in diagnosis of colorectal cancer
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a third most common epithelial carcinoma. CRC is known to develop from the early precancerous lesion to full blown malignancy via definite phases due to cumulative mutations and aberrant methylation of number of genes. The use of serum biomarkers that is non-invasive to discriminate cancer patients from healthy persons will prove to be an important tool to improve the...
متن کاملThe genetics of loneliness: linking evolutionary theory to genome-wide genetics, epigenetics, and social science.
As a complex trait, loneliness is likely to be influenced by the interplay of numerous genetic and environmental factors. Studies in behavioral genetics indicate that loneliness has a sizable degree of heritability. Candidate-gene and gene-expression studies have pointed to several genes related to neurotransmitters and the immune system. The notion that these genes are related to loneliness is...
